WHAT IS BIOSECURITY? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
THE FACTS
WHAT IS BIOSECURITY?
Biosecurity are measure which are put in place to prevent the introduction and transmission of harmful pathogens which pose a risk to the health of your horses by causing infectious disease.
You may have comea cross measures like these on your livery yard or even at stay away events – isolation for new horse arrival and checking vaccination records are up to date etc.
These are put in place to ensure the welfare and health of your horses whilst travelling, staying at and away from home to prevent transmission to other horses and outbreaks of diseases.
These are often measures which you wouldn’t even second guess or consider normally in your day to day, however, it is crucial that as equestrians, we start taking a more serious approach to biosecurity with your horse.
If we all individually take count for our own biosecurity and hygiene, we reduce the risk of infection, transmission and unnecessary death.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON PATHOGENS YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF?
There are plenty of pathogens which could cause harm to your horse, however, the most commonly known equine diseases you should be aware of are Streptococcus Equi, EHV, Equine Influenza and Trichophyton. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be aware that there are other pathogens in your horses which can harm, these are just the ones which are the most visible in the equine world.

WHEN ARE YOU MOST AT RISK OF INFECTIONS & TRANSMISSION?
Travelling can be stressful for some horses which can directly affect their immune system and weaken it. When your horses immune system is weakened, they are at higher risk of picking up diseases but might struggle to fight it off. It also increases the risk of transmission and cross contamination. When at events or meeting up with friends, horses have direct and indirect contact with other horses, transport, stabling and other surfaces which could, if not correctly cleaned and disinfected, be
This is why following biosecurity measures yourself as well as at other venues is crucial to reduce the risk of transmission to other horses at other yards.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KEEP ON TOP OF HORSE HYGIENE?
We all want to keep our horses on top form. We put a lot of time, effort and money into them to allow them to compete to high levels and give them the best chance of a long, healthy life. So why should they live in dirty conditions?
When it comes to ourselves, we take hygiene seriously to reduce the risk of picking up illnesses from our day to day, particularly since COVID. When we go out, we wash our hands, when we come home, we clean our houses, all to reduce the risk of picking up infections, diseases and live in homes not filled with dirt, rubbish and mould. So why should our horses environment be any different?
We respect that there are already a lot of things to keep on top of as a horse owner, but environments such as stables and transport are where your horse spends a lot of its time can accumulate a lot of grime such as faecal matter, urine and old bedding. If left for a considerable amount of time this build up becomes harmful to your horses health – creating hoof issues, breathing issues, skin conditions and even aggravate existing conditions. The dirty, wet environment also encourages infectious diseases to thrive and spread for longer.
This can then affect the performance of your horse. Therefore, horse hygiene is just as important as the farrier, physic, tack etc!

We use the best products and specialist equipment to thoroughly clean your stables, yards, transport and more to the highest standard, meaning you can be assured your horse is going into a clean, sanitary environment, free from harmful pathogens.
